Before visiting New York City for the first time I knew that I need to visit Brooklyn in addition to spending time in Manhattan. However, I did not expect to visit Brooklyn several times during our week-long stay in the city. There is so much to do and see in that hip borough that there I no way of not visiting Brooklyn. So, here are the top five things to do in Brooklyn and too add to your New York itinerary.
1. Find street art in Bushwick
Bushwick is the latest authentic hipster hub of Brooklyn full of artists and creatives. Besides amazing street art you can find cool cafés, art galleries, and lots of other quirky places there! The photogenic graffiti is spread throughout the whole neighborhood, so that you keep stumbling upon these masterpieces.
2. Make a stop at DUMBO
DUMBO, which stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, has without a doubt the most iconic photo spot in Brooklyn! It’s located on the corner of Washington and Water street, in case you need to snap that instagrammable shot. In addition, the Brooklyn Flea market takes place in DUMBO on Sundays in April through October and is worth a visit.
3. Eat your way through Smorgasburg
This is truly a gem in Brooklyn! Smorgasburg is an open-air street food market taking place on Saturday’s and Sunday’s. You can find street food from all over the world and all kinds of innovative food creations. Once a week the market takes place right at the East River in Williamsburg , so that you can enjoy your food while gazing at the Manhattan skyline. Make sure to try as many food stalls as possible!
4. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge is a symbol of New York, connecting the boroughs Manhattan and Brooklyn. When making your way to Brooklyn, cross the bridge over the East River. Make sure to turn around every once in a while to have a look at the Manhattan skyline!
5. Stroll through Williamsburg
Williamsburg was (surprisingly) one of my favorite places in New York! It’s such a great neighborhood to unwind and get away from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. Start wandering around at Bedford Avenue, which is the main street. Williamsburg is full of cute boutiques, quirky and cool cafés, restaurants and bars and has overall a very laid-back and hip vibe. Absolutely a must-visit in Brooklyn!
