My first-ever trip to Portugal was to the coastline of the Algarve! One thing was certain after my visit, I will return to the Algarve, because the Algarve has so much more to offer besides beautiful beaches. Here is my guide to nine things to do in the Algarve besides lounging at the beach.
1. Take a tuk tuk ride through Tavira
Tavira is a small charming town in the southwest Algarve that should be on your itinerary. The best way to discover Tavira is by taking a tuk tuk ride. I went with Tuk Tuk Tavira and our friendly and entertaining guide showed us around. It is such a fun way to discover the history and nature like the salt fields and we even saw some flamingos!
2. Blend your own wine
I’m not a wine connoisseur. However, after my visit to Quinta Dos Vales I certainly feel like one. Quinta Dos Vales is a beautiful winery with unique pieces of art scattered throughout the property. After visiting the fields, seeing the wine cellar and having the process explained on how to actually make wine, it was time to blend my own bottle of red wine. This was an exciting experience and it made me appreciate wine even more.
3. Stroll around Faro
Being the capital of the Algarve region, Faro should be on your itinerary. Simply take a stroll through the scenic and peaceful town to discover its charm, history and beauty. To perfectly end your day, watch the sunset near the sea. Pure bliss!
4. Explore a hidden waterfall
In case you get bored of the many beaches, then there is another way to cool down during a hot summer day. Pego de Inferno is literally a hidden gem waterfall. It takes a little hike through the greenery until you reach the clear fresh water, but it’s definitely worth a visit.
5. Enjoy an exquisite dinner at by Heinz Beck
If you fancy an extraordinary dinner experience, then there is only one place to go in the Algarve: Gusto by Heinz Beck at the Conrad. The Michelin star fine dining restaurant presents Mediterranean cuisine in a stylish and contemporary setting. Our menus were prepared to each one’s preferences and from the table you’re able to take a glimpse into the kitchen watching the chefs preparing each dish. Each course is paired with a wine, making it certainly an unforgettable dinner experience!
6. Pick clams and oysters
Seafood is part of the local food culture in the Algarve. Besides eating lots of it, we were also able to experience picking clams ourselves. A traditional Portuguese boat took us to a beach, where locals pick clams. My biggest learning: Finding clams is not an easy job! Afterwards, we rewarded ourself for the work with some wine and fresh oysters.
7. Eat your way through the Algarve
During my visit, I was lucky to eat at many great restaurants experiencing the local cuisine of the Algarve. Fresh seafood, regional vegetables and of course the famous Portuguese pastry Pastel de Nata.
Some of my favorite restaurants included the following: Al Mar – Tapas by the sea, Faro e Bemfica and A Ver Tavira.
8. Rejuvenate at Portugal’s largest spa
The Hilton Vilamoura is home to the largest spa in Portugal: the 7 Seven Spa Vilamoura! It’s a quiet oasis amidst the resort with indoor thermal pools, saunas and beautiful relaxing areas. The ideal place to unwind, rejuvenate and take some time for yourself. The spa is also welcoming non-guests of the Hilton Vilamoura.
9. Purchase some stunning pottery
When in Portugal, discovering pretty pottery and tiles is a must! I visited Porches Pottery, which is known for beautiful hand made Algarvian ceramics since 1968. Besides many plates and pots, Porches Pottery owns a beautiful garden and a cafe. Spoiler: visiting Porches Pottery will make you want to redecorate your home.
Have you been to the Algarve or are you planning a visit?
Let me know, if you would add anything to this list!
Thank you to the Conrad Algarve and the Hilton Vilamoura for showing me the Algarve! The opinions expressed on this blog and the photos are as always my own.
