When it comes to traveling, there are certain things that are on my never-ending bucket list. Staying in a water villa in the Maldives was one of them! During the last stop of our Maldivian journey, I could happily cross of this point from the list. Read here about my water villa experience and my stay at the Kuramathi in the Maldives!
Quick Overview
Kuramathi is one of the bigger islands in the Maldives with a length of almost 2 km. Due to its large size, the island is divided into three parts. Each part has their own reception and main restaurant. Also, there are buggy stops scattered around the islands for longer distances (or in case you’re feeling lazy). Overall, you will notice the lush and beautiful greenery everywhere, which the resort attaches great importance to. The island ends in a long and picturesque sand bank, which makes an ideal place to watch the sun disappear in the endless ocean.
Location & Transfer
Located about 60 km west from the airport and the capital Malé, Kuramathi Maldives can be reached by an one hour boat ride or by a 20-minute sea plane flight. My boyfriend and I optioned for the boat ride and caught up on some sleep in the meantime. When arriving on the island, we were personally greeted with a refreshing drink and driven with a buggy to our home for the next days.
The Water Villa
After a quick drive through the lush scenery, we were shown to the deluxe water villa, where we stayed for two nights. The spacious villa is well-quipped with a comfy king-sized bed, a daybed next to the flat screen television, complimentary Wi-Fi and a separated area that had a mini bar, an espresso machine, complimentary water and a wine chiller with a vast wine selection. A dream for every wine lover! The interior has a modern and chic look with light colors that I really liked.
The bathroom features double vanities, complimentary amenities, a rain shower and a big closet. To complete the luxurious setting, a freestanding bathtub ensures an incredible view of the turquoise water. The perfect place to take a relaxing bath in the evening!
The expansive wooden deck is furnished, features an outdoor shower and, obviously, offered direct access into the ocean. I could sit on the deck for hours. I would observe the fishes, take a quick dip to cool off and watch the dreamy sunset. Pure bliss!
Restaurants & Food
When it comes to food, the Kuramathi Maldives does not fall short of choices! There are three main restaurants that offer international themed buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Additionally, 15 à la carte restaurants and bars serve specialities from all over the globe to match all tastes and preferences.
On our first evening, we dined at the Italian à la carte restaurant ‘the Palm’, which is beautifully and fittingly situated under lots of palm trees. As a starter I can recommend the homemade Maldivian yellow fin tuna and the grilled tiger prawns as a main dish. The food was fresh and perfectly prepared! This restaurant also offers homemade ice cream of the local fruit screw pine. The taste is difiicult to describe, as it doesn’t compare to anything else. Definitely a must-try!
Facilities & Services
Due to its size, the island is able to offer its guests a vast variety of activities and services. There are three pools (my favorite was the infinity pool next to the champagne bar), a tennis court, a fully equipped gym and also the island’s house reef.
In addition, the Kuramathi Maldives has a spa, a kids area and an eco centre, where guests can learn more about the sea life of the Maldives. I was quite impressed to learn that this resort also grows their own herbs and salads on the island. From the basil leafs for your pizza to the mint in your cocktail.
Snorkeling Safari
One of my favorite activities during my stay at Kuramathi was the snorkeling safari. We drove to a reef near the island accompanied by a marine biologist, who pointed out the highlights of the Maldivian underwater world. We spotted all kinds of colorful fish, several octopus, some little sharks and also Selma, the turtle. It is an unbelievable experience seeing these beautiful creatures in their natural environment.
The Water Villa Experience
Staying in a water villa was just as dreamy as one would imagine! Every morning, we would wake up to watch the sunrise from our beds. The panoramic view over the crystal clear water was breathtaking from the first moment upon stepping into the villa, until the last moment when we sadly had to say goodbye to the Kuramathi Maldives. If you’re an ocean lover, than a water villa should be your choice of room!
Overall, the island resort has a lively and relaxing atmosphere that creates a sense of well-being. It is suitable for couples, families and groups of friends alike. The staff was friendly and helpful at all times, which made our stay truly enjoyable. You should book the Kuramathi, if you’re looking for a vibrant island life in a paradise-like setting that will still give you the opportunity to relax. That is exactly what the Maldives are made for!
Thank you to Kuramathi Maldives for hosting me! The opinions expressed on this blog are always my own.
