From all the places that we visited in Bali, Ubud was my favorite. The surrounding nature, the omnipresent Balinese culture, the laid back vibe and the numerous things that you can do in Ubud made it the ideal place. I would highly recommend to stay a few nights there to experience all that Ubud has to offer. You can also watch my Bali Instagram highlights to get a glimpse of Ubud.
1. Visit the Monkey Forest
This is definitely a must when visiting Ubud! The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is home to countless cheeky monkeys and seems like a mystical place with temples surrounded by a jungle. However, make sure to be aware of the rules when stepping into the forest.
Entrance fee: 80,000 Indonesian Rupiahs
2. Go shopping at Art Market
Located in the center of Ubud, you can find the Art Market, which is a great place for shopping. Fruits, little souvenirs, jewellery, decor and also the typical wooden Bali bags can be bought there. If you find something you like, make sure to always bargain!
Entrance fee: free
3. Visit the Ubud Palace
The Ubud Royal Palace, also called Puri Saren Agung, is situated opposite of the Art Market and is the residence of the local royal family. The palace, its temples and gardens showcase Balinese architecture and art. Traditional Balinese dance performances often take place there, too.
Entrance fee: free
4. Stroll through the Tegalalang Rice Fields
You have probably already seen pictures of the famous rice fields all over Instagram, the Tegalalang Rice Fields in Ubud are a popular spot. Depending on the seasons, the rice fields do look different. We really took our time and walked through the fields for several hours, which ,yes, was exhausting but also a lot of fun. Number one tip: take good walking shoes!
Entrance fee: 15,00 Indonesian Rupiahs
5. Swing above Rice Fields
If you’re in for a little fun in Tegalalang, then get on one of the many swings scattered in between the rice fields. The swings are hanging between two palm trees and you can enjoy an incredible view while soaring high above the lush green jungle. Although you will swing pretty high above the ground, there is no need to worry, as you will be secured.
Entrance fee:Prices vary.
6. Watch the traditional Kecak and Fire Dance
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when my fiancé suggested to watch a traditional Kecak fire dance. Basically, the Kecak dance tells a story through dances and a choir that is rhythmically chanting. Watching the dance is an impressive cultural experience and I would recommend to visit a performance.
Entrance fee: 100,00 Indonesian Rupiahs
7. Experience at least one Waterfall
Bali offers its visitors breathtaking nature and beautiful landscapes. These also include the many waterfalls like Tibumana, Aling Aling, Leke Leke or Tegenungan. When visiting Tegenungan, we came across the Dtukad River Club, which sits on top of the waterfall and is such a fun and relaxing place after being adventurous.
Entrance fee: 15,000 Indonesian Rupiahs
8. Take a bath at Pura Tirta Empul
Bali is a place full of culture and Ubud is the spiritual heart of it. The water temple Pura Tirta Empul, which translates to ‘holy water spring’, is one of the largest temples and one of the most holy places in Bali. In the center of the temple complex you can find the holy spring, where the purification rituals are taking place. If you wish to participate in the ritual, then you need to follow the rules that are displayed at the entrance.
Entrance fee: 50,000 Indonesian Rupiahs
9. Explore the ruins of Pura Gunung Kawi
Pura Gunung Kawi is one of the oldest temples in Bali. The huge shrines and monuments are carved into rocks, which is quite impressive. In order to reach the temple complex, you will need to hike many steps. So, take your comfy shoes.
Entrance fee: 40,000 Indonesian Rupiahs
10. Try local dishes
No trip to Bali is complete without trying some local dishes like Nasi Goreng or Gado Gado. Luckily, Ubud has many so-called warungs (little family-owned business), where you can try traditional Balinese food. Warungs are the best place for affordable and delicious local cuisine.
11. Hike on top of Mount Batur
I have to be honest with you guys, this one was tough. Mount Batur is an active volcano situated about an hour north of Ubud. We booked a tour to hike the volcano. You will be picked up around 5 AM, you get a little breakfast before the hike and then your guide will equip you with small flashlight, because it is pitch black. The hike is a bit scary, because you literally see nothing and have to trust your guide. At the top, you will be rewarded with a sunrise and the incredible view of volcano Mount Agung.
Entrance fee:Prices vary.
12. Have a relaxing pool day
There are two popular spots in Ubud to unwind with some music, good food and drinks while cooling down in a pool. There is Folk Ubud (near the Monkey Forest) and Jungle Fish (near Campuhan Ridge). We only visited Folk Ubud and loved it. It’s a very chilled vibe and I had the best avocado toast ever (not exaggerating!).
Entrance fee: free
13. Wander the Campuhan Ridge Walk
If you want Balinese jungle feels, then head to the Campuhan Ridge Walk. It will take you right through tropical greenery with an incredible view. It’s a fairly easy walk, but be aware of mosquitos.
Entrance fee: free
