I am currently sitting at my desk next to my stuffed suitcase while it is raining in Berlin. About 24 hours earlier, I was jumping from an water villa into crystal-clear blue water in the Maldives. Something just seems not right. Thinking about my trip feels unreal or rather like distant memory, as the Maldives have always been a dream destination of mine.
After an eight hour flight from Istanbul, our plane finally approached the islands of the Maldives and my excitement rose by each minute. Seeing the blue water and palm trees from afar made me instantly happy. Once we stepped out of the plane, the heat immediately hit us. We arrived in paradise!
My boyfriend and I spend 12 days in the Maldives and stayed half the time on a local island called Maafushi and the other half on different island resorts. This way, we had the best of both worlds. The local island has a very laid back vibe and it was great to experience the local life. The resort islands are just as picturesque and peaceful as you would imagine. If you’re thinking about traveling to the Maldives, I would recommend you to see both sides of the Maldives.
The Maldives are known for their magnificent underwater life. Seeing colorful fishes, turtles, octopus and sharks up close in their natural environment is one of the most exciting and wonderful experiences. We were also lucky to see pilot whales and dolphins jumping out of the water!
Every day we tried to catch the sunrise and the sunset. However, waking up daily at 6 am was a real challenge, so that we ended up skipping the sunrise once in a while. I guess, being on vacation is an acceptable excuse, right? The sunsets were my personal highlights: they have been absolutely breathtaking!
At the end of our stay we had the pleasure to stay in an overwater villa. A visit to the Maldives is just not complete without staying in one. Having direct access to the ocean and waking up to an endless view of the sea was pure bliss.
